Today, American music producer, songwriter, and recording artist Jen Miller released her highly anticipated album, “Smoky Mountain Special.” The ten song folk-pop album takes listeners on an emotional journey, fearlessly exploring the unspoken truths of toxic relationships, family identity, LGBT identity, gun violence, and self-discovery.
In an era saturated with mass-produced music featuring the same Splice loops and samples, “Smoky Mountain Special” stands out as a raw and authentic work of art. Jen Miller’s soulful vocals and ingenious songwriting captivate audiences, drawing them into her world of vulnerability and resilience.
The album, inspired by folk music’s golden era and infused with contemporary elements, presents a fresh take on a classic genre. Collaborations with Nashville-based artists Adam Mac, Elijah Dax, and Dēdo add layers of depth that cross genres, meshing into a standout contribution to modern music. The entire album was produced by Jen Miller and Peter Eddins in Nashville, Tennessee, with Jen’s only production and writing rules being, “the banjo has to be involved in every song,” and “let’s say the quiet part out loud.” Yet, the album does not sound like what you may think an album with banjo on every song would.
The album’s ten tracks showcase Miller’s versatility as a songwriter and producer, with each song delving into deeply relatable themes. From the introspective “Ceiling” to the poignant “Throw Me In The Lake,” the album invites listeners to connect with the artist on a profound level. The tracklist includes standout songs such as “So So Long” featuring Elijah Dax, a captivating exploration of self-medication and relationship struggles, and “Smoky Mountain Special” featuring Adam Mac — a playful yet profound tale of two Southern families facing judgment for their unique role in providing the town’s vices.

Nashville-based songwriter, producer, and Recording Academy member Jen Miller today released her new independent album, Quiet Parts Out Loud, available now on all streaming platforms. Written and recorded between Nashville, Columbus, Ohio, and Lake Lure, North Carolina, the album marks a bold, hook-forward evolution for Miller — blending folk storytelling with indie rock energy, pop immediacy, and protest-era urgency.
Quiet Parts Out Loud follows Miller’s 2023 release Smoky Mountain Special, a banjo-driven folk record that earned Recording Academy consideration for Best Folk Album and Best American Roots Song (“Throw Me In The Lake”). Where that album distilled grief into stark roots music, Quiet Parts Out Loud expands outward — louder, sharper, and built for communal listening.
Anchored by driving guitars, melodic restraint, and incisive lyrics, the album moves from the indie-rock bite of “Don’t” to the cathartic protest of “Put Some Music On,” and the anti-capitalist romance of “Make Love.” Across the record, Miller explores what happens when personal truth collides with cultural overload — the pressure to perform, explain, and speak before you’re ready. The title track captures that tension plainly: the demand to say the quiet parts out loud.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Miller began releasing music as a teenager, independently crowdfunding and releasing projects that charted on iTunes, touring nationally, and opening for artists including Ed Sheeran, Passenger, Cage The Elephant, and Young the Giant — all before the age of 22. Her work has been featured by The Washington Post, The Today Show, Modern Luxury, People Magazine, CMT, and Billboard.
Now a full-time songwriter and producer in Nashville, Miller continues to build a body of work that values clarity, courage, and connection over polish alone. Quiet Parts Out Loud positions her at the intersection of modern folk, indie rock, and socially conscious pop — music built to move both bodies and conversations.
Quiet Parts Out Loud is available now on all streaming platforms.
